DISTURBED Frontman: 'I See Ourselves As Being A Three-Decade Spanning Band'
November 23, 2006Howie Magner of BattleCreekEnquirer.com recently conducted an interview with DISTURBED frontman David Draiman. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On DISTURBED's cover of "Land of Confusion", a song first made popular by GENESIS in the late 1980s:
"That's kind of the whole idea. It's taking a song that's absolutely nothing like us and making it our own. It's one thing to do a SABBATH cover or a MAIDEN cover, it would almost be expected. But with this, you can change it stylistically, and it becomes your own."
On the fact that die-hard heavy metal fans may not see DISTURBED as being quite heavy enough:
"We probably have too much melody going on or we're not quite as turbulent or caustic. While I really love that type of music, it's not what we try to do. If we have to place things in context, we're more hard rock than heavy metal these days."
On the band's ever-growing fan base:
"Melodies and hooks are a huge part, if not the biggest part, of our music. Whether vocally or guitar-wise, we always try to emphasize that. We want people to have the refrains of songs coming back in their head. We want people to remember and sing along."
"We're never satisfied with where we are. I see ourselves as being a three-decade spanning band. We have the drive and desire. It's a question of us being able to continue writing great records."
